Nomadic

Nomadic Brewery in Jeonju is owned by my friend, John. I don’t know much about brewing beer. I like beer. Making it, not so much.

Interesting? Not so sure.

I like drinking beer. I like drinking John’s beer. I’m drinking one while writing this.

He asked me to come take photos of him while he “brewed.” I wasn’t really sure what this entailed. He said he would give me some beer so being the good friend I hope I am I headed over.

He had only a couple of requests:

  1. He wanted the photos to be in colour.
  2. He wanted the photos to be film and able to be printed large.

Easy peasy.

Some Portra and the Rolleiflex named Seonju.

The first thing I noticed during my first “brew” was that it mostly consists of cleaning. Cleaning and more cleaning.

And then some cleaning.

I decided to hide in the kitchen while the cleaning was being done. Luckily the pots were already clean.

Nomadic has epic pizza if you’re ever in the Jeonju area 😉

I’ve known John for a long time. He’s one of my closest friends. I think I messed up his vibe by being there, even though he’d invited me. We had a great time, but probably to the detriment of his work.

John is one of the most passionate people I know. I envy his drive. I envy his passion. Being there with him while he worked showed me that I need more drive.

More passion.

It’s coming back. I can feel it coming back. I had gotten to the point where in a situation like this I’d have only taken the photos on the Rolleiflex that he’d asked for and that would have been it. Instead, I took these with my “YouTube” camera and enjoyed every minute of it. The Rolleiflex photos were all calculated and posed. Was fun to take these in between those planned “moments.”

John, if you’re reading this buddy, it was a blast. Thanks for inviting me into your Zen.

Sadly, I don’t think I know a thing about making beer even after the 8 hours we spent together. You tried to teach me, but, as Mr. Burke often told me in school if it doesn’t directly seem apparent to me why I should know something most likely I’m not going to try and learn it.

I did learn something.

Things in life don’t come easy. Hard work.

Passion.

Drive.

Beer always helps. You’re doing God’s work, mate.

  1. I missed this, your writing, thoughts flowing out of your fingertips into paragraphs. Your writing is your Zen, and of course the photos (pointing out the obvious). What we all need from time to time is to share our passion and spirit with others, no need for it to be the same topic, just let some of that spirit inspire others. His beer is your film 🙂
